DNS Alerts for Client Devices
The Nile Access Service continuously monitors the DNS transactions across all connected client devices. When a significant percentage of clients encounter DNS failures, the Nile Access Service generates alerts to notify the network administrators.
The Nile Access Service uses the following thresholds to determine when to generate DNS alerts:
If 1% to 10% of the clients attempting DNS transactions in the last 15 minutes (with a sliding window of 5 minutes) have encountered failures, the following alert is generated:
DNS Alert: 5% <= Clients < 10% <# number> of clients attempting DNS transactions in the last 15 minutes encountered failures at <site> for <x hrs/mins>
If 10% to 25% of the clients attempting DNS transactions in the last 15 minutes have encountered failures, the following alert is generated:
DNS Alert: 10% <= Clients < 25% <# number> of clients (>10%) attempting DNS transactions in the last 15 minutes encountered failures at <site> for <x hrs/mins>
If 25% to 100% of the clients attempting DNS transactions in the last 15 minutes have encountered failures, the following alert is generated:
DNS Alert: 25% <= Clients <= 100% <# number> of clients (>25%) attempting DNS transactions in the last 15 minutes encountered failures at <site> for <x hrs/mins>
The DNS alert is "closed" when the condition is cleared, i.e., when less than 1% of the clients are encountering DNS failures.
The DNS alerts are categorized as "Client Devices" in the Nile Cloud Services Portal's alert table. When a user clicks on the alert, they are taken to the "Devices" page, which displays the filtered list of devices with the corresponding DNS errors.
By providing these DNS alerts, the Nile Access Service helps network administrators quickly identify and address any issues related to DNS authentication, ensuring the seamless operation of the network infrastructure.
